World Health Organization Issues Concern Over Critical Scarcity of Obesity Medications

Less than one in 10 individuals eligible to benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy can access them, warns the World Health Organization as it releases its inaugural guidance on the medications.

With more than one billion individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is urging more widespread and fairer availability to GLP-1 medication.

Per forecasts, over two billion will be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our new guidelines acknowledges that obesity is a long-term condition that can be treated with holistic and continuous treatment," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are significant hurdles to broad access to the injections that can assist patients in reducing significant body mass, explains the agency.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Despite the current most optimistic case, the production of these medications would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, according to the WHO.

The advice calls on nations and manufacturers to widen availability, via approaches like licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on semaglutide – the main ingredient of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in multiple nations in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Injections Operate

The injections imitate a natural hormone to slow digestion, suppress the appetite and enhance satiety so people consume fewer calories.

People usually see weight reduction within a few weeks of commencing the once-weekly jabs.

Studies suggests people may regain a significant portion a year later of discontinuing the drug, when their normal hunger come back.

To be above a healthy weight increases your risk for developing health problems, like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and specific malignancies.

Obesity concerns individuals in countries worldwide and was associated with millions of fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
