In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of significant explosions shaking Tehran, amid statements from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Context: Escalating Strains and Prior Events

- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected assertions about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
