A recent study reveals that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such treatments need to be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," described a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
